Statement re: Impeachment of Chief Justice Corona
December 15, 2011
Recently, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Chief Justice Renato Corona. This led to the transmittal of the records to the Senate for further proceedings.
On the other hand, CJ Corona has assailed the same act as an attack on the entire judiciary. All the while the CJ has come forward with his intention to fully face the charges whatever they may be head on.
As students of the law, we understand that this bears legal consequences.
However, given the recent history of our co-equal branches clashing on questionable political and extra-legal procedures, going back to the constitution is very much a welcome thing.
Impeachment is a process, which is provided within the framework of the Philippine Constitution. Taken by itself the act is valid and binding. However having said that, we will not pre-judge the issues as they stand. That is left to the will and discretion of the Senate in which we repose our full trust and confidence.
As a valid legal process, we welcome the resolution of this issue as soon as possible so that we can move forward as a nation that upholds the rule of law.
